Lead a Jane Jacobs Walk in your community

Jane Jacobs Walk

6th Annual Jane Jacobs Walks

May 4 & 5, 2013

“The ballet of the good city sidewalk never repeats itself from place to place, and in any one place is always replete with new improvisations.” – The Death and Life of Great American Cities

Jane Jacobs Walk tours are street-level celebrations of author and urban activist Jane Jacobs’ legacy. The tours usually coincide with Jacobs’ birthday, but can happen at any time, and combine the simple act of exploring and observing neighborhoods while sharing their urban history and local lore. These neighborhood tours get people out of their cars and onto their city streets and sidewalks to reconnect with each other and rediscover their communities. Last year 132 events took place in 32 cities across the United States.

We invite you to lead a tour in an area where you live, work or play. It simply involves planning a route, thinking through the stories and subjects you want to discuss, then taking participants on your tour. You get to decide what’s important. You can also share the guiding duties with a few friends or colleagues. These walks are less like guided, information tours and more like walking conversations and are meant to be fun and participatory – everyone has a story and they’re usually keen to share it.

Jane JacobsParticipating in a Jane Jacobs Walk is a great opportunity to build social bridges over the geographic, economic and cultural barriers that so often divide our modern cities and towns. All tours are given, and taken, for free. We help with the publicity, logistics and website management – while you get the word out with your local networks and friends.

Jane Jacobs Walk is a program of the Center for the Living City. With offices in the Rocky Mountain Region and New York City, Jane Jacobs Walk provides support and information for organizations and individuals on how to host a Jane Jacobs Walk event in their local community. We hope you’ll join us in offering an insider’s take on your city’s vibrant and fascinating neighborhoods. We look forward to hearing from you soon.
