A Tour of 409 Cumberland

409 Cumberland

409 Cumberland Avenue is Avesta Housing's latest success story. It is comprised of 57 mixed affordable and market rate studio, one, and two bedroom apartments, a "healthy living center" with a community kitchen and a rooftop greenhouse, all built on a once vacant lot in Midtown Portland.

GrowSmart Maine staff and Board hosted a tour of twelve invited guests through Portland's newest infill development. Seth Parker and Brooks Moore of Avesta Housing led the tour, explaining the start-to-finish process that brought us to present day. Also present was John Ryan of Wright-Ryan, contractor on the project.

We were in awe by the impeccable design of the common areas boasting local art from MECA students and even further by the breathtaking views of Casco Bay and Mt. Washington from the rooftop garden. The units combine an urban sleekness with a cozy aesthetic that matches our New England city. Residents can enjoy access to the on-site u-share vehicles, bike room and one of 18 parking spaces in the below grade parking structure.  Energy-efficient materials and design as well as handicap access throughout the building add to this modern jewel in the center of historic downtown.

This building is a smart growth champion, and we applaud Avesta Housing, CWS Architects, and Wright-Ryan for their impassioned commitment to sustainable development.
