Each town or region that embarks on the Making Headway in Your Community Program with GrowSmart Maine does so in their own way. The Town of Unity, Maine is no exception. Unity has spent considerable time planning and visioning and is ready for a more focused approach to addressing what comes next. Building on all the past work of various committees, individuals, and processes, Unity is ready to consider the ways it can strengthen its economic base while preserving its unique sense of place.

Faced with many of the same challenges as other small and rural towns in Maine, Unity is undergoing a process to discover how, and if, it can become a destination. If Unity were a destination, how would the people, the town, and the surrounding area benefit? And what does it even mean to be a destination? What aspects of community life must be protected as the town changes and grows?
These and other questions will be considered by the whole town at ‘Food Conversation, and the Future of Unity’, an event for local stakeholders to gather, share a meal, and figure out how to move forward. The Making Headway Program is designed to propel Maine towns toward lasting prosperity while staying true to what people love most about their communities.
