GrowSmart Maine Testifies in Favor of LD 1613

Testimony of Nancy Smith, Executive Director of GrowSmart Maine

in favor of LD 1613,

“An Act to Strengthen the Relationship

between Landowners and Land Users”

January 23, 2012

Senator  Martin, Representative Davis,  and members of the Joint Standing Committee on Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.  My name is Nancy Smith and I am the Executive Director of GrowSmart Maine. As many of you know from our previous interactions with the committee, GrowSmart Maine is a statewide non-profit organization working to grow Maine's economy, protect its distinctive character, and enhance our state's quality places. I regret that previously scheduled commitments prevent me or other GrowSmart Maine representatives from presenting this testimony at today’s Public Hearing.

As a part of our commitment to strengthening Maine’s economy, GrowSmart Maine is particularly enthusiastic about well grounded, thoughtful and creative proposals which seek to grow the economy in a sustainable manner while at the same time preserving our state’s unique character and quality of places.  We believe Rep. Cushing’s bill fits that description, and we support the amended language offered by SWOAM.

Maine’s long held tradition of open recreational access to private lands is truly unique in this country.  Landowners are facing increasing challenges related to this open access, and their concerns as outlined in Tom Doak’s testimony, warrant addressing.  GrowSmart Maine has attended several meetings on this topic hosted by the Small Woodland Owners Association of Maine and the Sportsmen’s Alliance of Maine and we support their efforts.

I welcome any questions regarding GrowSmart Maine’s support for LD 1613, and would be pleased to attend the work session if necessary.
