Portland, Maine – Today, GrowSmart Maine and Envision Maine released Reinventing Maine Government; How Mainers Can Shape a Sustainable Government and a New Prosperity. Two years in the making, this report outlines an action plan that calls for effective innovation and improved efficiency at all levels of governing in Maine.

"GrowSmart Maine is proud to have commissioned Envision Maine for the production of Reinventing Maine Government", stated GrowSmart Maine Board Chair Bonita Pothier of Key Bank. "We believe this report provides a solid foundation for statewide conversations that must happen as we continue to bring the cost of governing ourselves to a sustainable level."

This report follows Charting Maine's Future, released by GrowSmart Maine in 2006.

"As the primary driver behind Reinventing Maine Government, we left the content and recommendations of the report to the researchers and authors. As with Charting Maine's Future, for which we commissioned The Brookings Institute, GrowSmart Maine is prepared to work with Mainers from across the state to go beyond the report and turn the ideas outlined here into action."

Beginning next week, Nancy Smith, Executive Director of GrowSmart Maine, will be engaged in statewide discussions about the organization's plans for the coming year. "While we pursue two on-the-ground community development projects, we are also reaching out to Mainers in creation of a legislative agenda for the new administration and the new legislature", said Smith. "We plan to include discussions of this report, a scorecard of results from Charting Maine's Future, and a look at policy and regulatory barriers to smart growth in Maine's villages, downtowns and cities, and working rural areas."

Smith will be speaking on Oct 7th to the Winthrop Area Chamber of Commerce, and Oct 8th at the York County Community College "Eggs and Issues" event.
